The health effects of drinking contaminated water is a subject of immense complexities due to the variety and concentrations of the contaminants encountered in the water that we drink. The human body is approximately 70% water and all functions of the body depend on the fluid to transport vital nutrients to the various organs. These sensitive biological-chemical functions can be easily altered by minute amounts of just the right chemical to cause a disastrous chemical reaction in your body.

One example is bisphenol A (BPA), a hormone mimicker and endocrine disruptor which can lead to feminization of males. BPA is found in consumer products such as: plastic bottles, non-stick cooking surfaces, and can liners.

Arsenic is a naturally occurring poison that can find its way easily into our drinking water through many pathways. Only 60 ppm (parts per million) is enough to poison a grown man. consumption of low levels of arsenic for a long period of time can cause skin pigmentation and cancer of the skin, bladder and liver. The E.P.A. regulates arsenic at 10 ppb (parts per billion).

The fluoride controversy has been going on since the 1940’s when it was first introduced into public water supplies. With in the Save the Water™ pages a comprehensive study of this chemical can be found. We recommend to find out for yourself by reading the available literature. It is not what you think or what you have been lead to believe.

Chlorine is added to our drinking water at the municipal water plant to avoid pathogenic contamination between the water plant and our tap. It is true that since we started adding chlorine to our drinking water at the end of the 18th century the number of gastrointestinal illness and deaths have been lowered substantially. With this in mind, we must also consider that the human body has very little use for chlorine and it should be filtered out of our water before consumption.

Chlorine and ammonia (chloramines) are also being added to drinking water at the water plant as a stronger version of chlorine alone. If you think chlorine is bad for your health… chloramines are even worse. A comprehensive 3 part study can be found  in the STW™ website.

THMs are chemical by-products formed in the water distribution pipes when chlorinated water comes in contact with organic matter. Leaves, roots and other organics find their way into the pipes a form these cancer causing chemicals when they come in contact with the chlorine.

Cadmium is a heavy metal found deep in the earth and we have taken it out of the earth a spread it all over. It is so wide spread that it is found in human mother’s milk. Cadmium and its salts have many industrial uses: Paints, rubber, plastics, inks, adhesives, and anything that is shinny contains the metal. It accumulates in the kidneys and liver and if you get enough of it, it causes chemical leukemia. In this condition, the cadmium replaces the iron in the hemoglobin in the blood and the person gets very, very sick and dies.

MTBE is a chemical added to gasoline to improve combustibility and reduce air pollution. Its first commercial use was in the mid 1970’s and it does help reduce air pollution. But now we find that we have MTBE in the drinking water supplies of 46 states. The few drops of gasoline that we spill every time we refuel our cars multiplied by the millions of fuellings everyday have caused that our drinking water become contaminated with this cancer causing chemical.

PCBs are considered persistent organic pollutants, meaning that once they are spilled into the environment, they do not degrade easily. Since the first synthesis of PCBs in 1917, this chemical has been disposed and spilled in the hundreds of millions of tons. It’s manufacture was banned in 1979 here in the U.S., but it is manufactured in other countries. A very useful industrial chemical that also has cause whales and dolphins to have cancer. Cancer is not a natural disease of these mammals. When we analyze whale or dolphin fat, we find 1,000 more PCBs in the sample than we do when we analyze human fat. These mammals are swimming in a toxic soup of PCBs and other cancer causing chemicals we have spilled as pollution.
