Reports from the Turkish Union of Engineers and Architects’ Chambers (TMMOB) and the Chamber of Environmental Engineers (CMO) showed that Ankara tap water was contaminated with waste. CHP deputy Gök brought samples of purportedly contaminated water to Parliament and challenged Ankara Mayor Melih Gökçek to drink a glass of the water.
Gök suggested Gökçek and any other person who denied the reports drink a glass of the water. The CHP deputy claimed that Gökçek had referred to outdated data when he talked about the cleanliness of Ankara’s water to the media on Wednesday.
The CHP deputy also claimed that there are many residents of Ankara are suffering from diarrhea as a result of the contaminated water.
Gökçek spoke to reporters on Thursday afternoon to respond to Gök’s allegations about Ankara’s tap water. Gökçek drank a glass of tap water in front of representatives from the media and criticized the CHP deputy’s statements.
The mayor of Ankara claimed companies selling water purifiers and bottled water did not provide quality products, instead claiming that the quality of Ankara’s tap water is better. Gökçek drank tap water throughout his meeting with the press and offered some to journalists who were present. While drinking the municipality’s tap water, Gökçek made a toast, saying, “For the honor of the CHP!”
