A water sample collected on Monday in Prairie Du Sac indicated the presence of E. coli bacteria.
Prairie Du Sac Waterworks did further investigation on the water sample Wednesday, and confirmed the contamination.
The Sauk County Health Department is working closely with the village of Prairie Du Sac to address any concerns.
E. coli bacteria presence indicates that the water may be contaminated from warm-blooded animals.
These bacteria can cause illness, and are particularly a concern for people with weakened immune systems.
The microbes in these wastes can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, or headaches.
The Prairie Du Sac Waterworks suggests that community members boil the tap water for at least one minute before use or purchase commercial bottles of water for drinking, food preparation and making ice.
The village of Prairie Du Sac has issued a boil water order until further notice.
To correct the problem, Prairie Du Sac Waterworks has increased Chlorine concentration to produce a residual level of 0.5 mg/l throughout the water distribution system. Additional sampling and testing is being completed.
