Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s water supply project is a study in stark contrast. All the appreciation NMC earned for implementing country’s first 24X7 water supply project is blemished by its abject failure to check groundwater contamination.

The NMC’s fire and emergency services department statistics come as a shocker and reveal how dangerous it is to drink or use well water for even bathing and domestic purpose.

In the last 23 months, firemen have dewatered as many as 5,053 private and public wells. For residents in several parts, leakages in sewer lines are a recurring woe, besides stagnant water that often seeps and mixes with well water. “The wells in Hanuman Nagar, Nehru Nagar and Laxmi Nagar zones are exposed to sewerage contamination,” admitted fire officer from Lakadganj fire station Chandan Khede.
