Reliable One Resources, Inc., a recently formed South Dakota corporation, today announced its intention to file a patent application on a water treatment technology and processes that will address the urgent need to minimize the impact of water use and contamination in the oil and natural gas industry.
As oil and natural gas production has increased in the United States, so has the already significant stress on the country’s water resources. Oil recovery has traditionally been a water intensive process with industry estimates of between three and 100 barrels of water used per one barrel of oil produced. This “produced water,” which contains contaminants, is also a major environmental problem when it passes through fresh water tables/zones, risking contamination of additional underground freshwater resources.
The proliferation of hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” has only added to the amount of water used in the oil and gas industry. According to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, fracking was used on almost 90% of wells drilled on federally managed lands in 2013. A 2011 report by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimated that up to 140 billion gallons of water per year were used in U.S. fracking operations, a number which has certainly risen as fracking has become more common in the ensuing years.
Much of the contaminated water from oil or mining activities is currently injected into large underground disposal wells, but both private and commercial disposal wells are regulated and have come under tremendous fire in recent years from governmental agencies and environmental interest groups. Growing public and regulatory pressure has resulted in state and federal legislation designed to limit disposal wells, curtail industry water use, and encourage water recycling.
Reliable One Resources will utilize industry proven, patent pending technology and proprietary processes to provide water treatment solutions to the oil and gas industry. Additional industries, including mining and agriculture, will be subsequently targeted due to similar pressure to reduce water use and decrease the environmental impacts on water supplies which result from their operations.
Five potential sites have been identified by Reliable One Resources — one each in North Dakota, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, and Nevada. The company is planning to initially develop two 7,000 square foot facilities, each having the capacity to process approximately 30,000 barrels of fluid per day. Ultimately, the company expects to develop facilities at all five targeted sites, as well as additional locations around the U.S. where there are high concentrations of oil and gas activity.

The management team of Reliable One Resources is comprised of directors and officers with decades of experience in the oil and gas industry, as well as the company’s Chief Operating Officer who devised the technology in addition to installing the infrastructure and managing other successful U.S. water treatment plants.
