Hospital Discharges Contain Potentially Harmful Contaminants of Concern in Water and Wastewater

The Water Research Foundation (WRF) launched an initiative to prevent certain, potentially harmful chemicals known as contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) from entering water and wastewater sources from hospital discharges. The research project was awarded to American Water. The researchers will investigate current discharge practices for hazardous materials and current regulations in the healthcare industry. The researchers will also examine microbial contaminants discharged from hospitals. This research will form the basis for creating feasible actions to reduce CECs from entering water systems.
