A first of its kind global assessment of anthropogenic nitrogen-related water pollution specified pollution by economic sector and crop by agricultural sector. The assessment covered the period 2002 to 2010. The assessment calculated the gray water footprints. “China contributed about 45% to the global total.” But 75% of the gray water related to nitrogen load cam from diffuse sources, namely agriculture. The river basins where the nitrogen load exceeded the basin’s assimilation capacity “provide residence to 48% of the global population.” Read more here:
