The United States Navy has been under pressure from former staff members on the topic of water contamination on bases. Staffers claim that the water on the naval bases was contaminated by perfluorinated chemicals, or PFCs, to a dangerous degree. It was only recently that the EPA recognized PFCs as harmful chemicals and had ways to detect them in water. The Navy insists that the water in the area is safe.
