Water Facts

Saving water should never become a public concern only in times of draught when water is undeniably scarce. The world water supply is finite. Every drop of water wasted is a drop less in a wild and scenic river, a drop less of a needed salmon run. Every drop of water that circles a drain unnecessarily wastes energy through the manufacturing of chemicals in the cycle of sewage treatment.

 

The world water supply is dwindling, and yet it is only water supply we will ever have. The water we use in our kitchens does not indicate an endless supply of safe, clean water. This water will be treated, and eventually will be returned to us, but in a chemically altered state from the previous time we used it.

 

Also, the less water we use, the less energy is required to deliver it to our homes. And since water heating is the second largest energy user in the home, we can have a tremendous impact by just getting a conscious grip on our faucets.

 

·          Did you know that 75% of the water we use in our homes is used in the bathroom?

·          Did you know that running a faucet requires 3 to 5 gallons of water every minute it is on?

·          You can easily use more than 5 gallons of water if you leave the tap running while you brush your teeth.

·          One water saving alternative is to wet and rinse your brush only as needed. This way only one half a gallon of water is used in the process.

·          If you shave with the water on, you use about 15 to 20 gallons of water each time. Another water saving alternative is to fill the basin. This way you only use 1 gallon of water. This saves up to 19 gallons each time you shave.

·          Washing dishes with the tap running can use an average of 30 gallons of water. If you fill the basin, you use about 5 gallons. This saves 25 gallons every time you do the dishes.

·          If you wash your car at home, using a hose, you can use up to 150 gallons of water. A trigger nozzle will save at least 50 gallons of water. If you use a self service car wash, you use 15 to 20 gallons. If you use a sponge and a bucket you use only 15 gallons. Savings could be in excess of 100 gallons each time.

·          A HOUSE HOLD CAN SAVE UP TO 20,000 GALLONS OF WATER A YEAR, BY JUST GETTING A LITERAL HANDLE ON IT’S FAUCETS. IF 100,000 HOUSEHOLDS GET A GRIP ON THEIR FAUCETS, WE SAVE 2 BILLION GALLONS OF WATER.

·          Only 3% of the earth's water is fresh water.

·          Just one part oil per million parts water (4 quarts per million gallons) will make water unfit for drinking.

·          The U.S. uses 450 billion gallons of water every day.

·          The smallest drip from a leaky faucet can waste over 50 gallons per day.

·          It takes 1,630,000 gallons of water to feed an American for a year.

·          In 6 months, a leaky toilet wastes 45,000 gallons of water.

·          To find a leak in your toilet: Put some die in the tank, if the color shows up in the bowl without a flush, you've a leak.

·          It takes 100 times more water to produce a pound of meat than a pound of wheat.

·          408 gallons of water are required to produce one serving of chicken.

·          It takes 1/2 gallon of water to cook a pot of macaroni, and one gallon to wash the pot.

·          Using a broom, not a hose, to clean a driveway and steps saves hundreds of gallons of water.

·          About 75% of the water we use in our homes is used in the bathroom.

·          99.5% of all fresh water on earth is in the ice caps and glaciers.
