Data centers that transmit internet traffic for our surfing habits use water to cool down. We need water to rinse parts that go into semiconductors that then get placed in our electronic devices. Businesses are embracing what&#8217;s called &#8220;water resilience.&#8221; They are paying more attention to new technologies that save water to prepare for and prevent water scarcity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the importance of water in the process of tech manufacturing and operation, it\u2019s no surprise that industrial water use places huge stress on freshwater supply and worsens freshwater scarcity. Research from the World Resources Institute (WRI) projects finds that global <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/files.wri.org\/d8\/s3fs-public\/achieving-abundance.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">freshwater demand will outpace supply by 56% by 2030<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global corporations are responding by building water resilience strategies. This helps them more efficiently use water in their manufacturing processes and reduce their overall environmental impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Water Resilience?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A general definition of water resilience that resonates with the business world is the set of plans and practices to ensure \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/axaxl.com\/fast-fast-forward\/articles\/boosting-businesses-water-resilience\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a reliable water supply that can adapt and respond despite imposed changes or challenges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Companies are Doing to Use Water More Sustainably<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies are paying more attention to sustainability in their business operations, particularly with regards to water usage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These companies are contributing to water resilience in the following ways:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A union of major companies are participating in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/transformtonetzero.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transform Net Zero<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft is striving to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/on-the-issues\/2020\/07\/21\/carbon-negative-transform-to-net-zero\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbon negative by 2030<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levi Strauss &amp; Co. found 20 ways to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.levi.com\/US\/en_US\/blog\/article\/how-we-make-jeans-with-less-water\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make jeans using less water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Procter &amp; Gamble has found a way to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/forget-tide-pods-p-g-bets-water-free-soap-swatches-are-the-future-11555946574\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make toiletries with no water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Are Corporations Embracing Water Resilience?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corporations are embracing water resilience for the following reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governmental and social pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good financial business sense<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More business opportunities with customers and investors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saving money on the water they use<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kickstart Water Resilience at Your Workplace<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water resilience is gaining traction in the business world. However, there is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wateronline.com\/doc\/from-insight-to-output-how-digital-solutions-can-advance-industrial-water-management-0001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">room for progress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the company where you work, you can take a number of steps to kickstart a water resilience initiative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, find out if there are any current sustainability initiatives in your company. If so, link up with any teams dedicated to investigating and addressing the ways in which your company uses water and impacts local water supply. If not, start a task force with like-minded co-workers.
